Profile:The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is one of the world's largest water agencies. Metropolitan's service area includes about 240 cities and unincorporated areas and covers some 5,200 square miles in Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura Counties. It has 26 independent member agencies consisting of 14 cities, 11 municipal water districts and one county water authority. Metropolitan provides water for nearly 18 million people. Metropolitan's primary sources of water are the Colorado River and the State Water Project. In addition, Metropolitan provides financial initiatives to local agencies to assist in the development of local supplies, including groundwater, recycled water and conservation. From its inception, Metropolitan has established an enviable record of reliability, high engineering quality, and public service. Metropolitan employs over 1,700 people at its downtown Los Angeles headquarters, field headquarters near Lake Havasu on the Colorado River, pumping plants, filtration plants and other facilities. |
